NodeScanner™: 10 Years of Protecting Offshore Structures

TSC Subsea

TSC Subsea is marking ten years of its ACFM® NodeScanner, a robotic inspection system developed to assess complex nodal weld connections on subsea structures across the oil & gas and offshore wind industries.

Introduced in 2016, NodeScanner was built on more than three decades of subsea Alternating Current Field Measurement (ACFM) expertise. The system brought proven crack detection and quantitative sizing capability into a purpose-designed, ROV-deployed inspection solution.

While originally developed for complex subsea jacket nodes, NodeScanner has since been successfully applied to a wider range of geometries, including pipe-to-pipe and cone-to-pipe welds.

Designed for Safer, Repeatable Subsea Inspection

Engineered for demanding offshore environments, NodeScanner enables diverless inspection, improving safety while delivering reliable and repeatable inspection data.

Robotic deployment provides:

  • Controlled probe positioning and tracking
  • Consistent coverage around complex weld geometries
  • High confidence in inspection results

Continuous Development Driven by Offshore Experience

Client feedback and operational use over the past decade have driven ongoing refinement, with a clear focus on:

  • Inspection repeatability
  • Data quality
  • System reliability

In 2024, TSC Subsea expanded capability by introducing Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) and Time-of-Flight Diffraction (ToFD) to complement ACFM inspections on pipe-to-pipe and cone-to-pipe welds, enabling full volumetric inspection coverage for these geometries.

Supporting Confident Integrity Decisions

Jonathan Bancroft, Vice President of TSC Subsea, said:

“NodeScanner reflects how subsea inspection technology should evolve — built on proven methods, refined through offshore use, and focused on delivering reliable data.
Over the past decade, the system has continued to develop in response to real operational requirements, supporting safer inspection and more confident integrity decision-making for asset owners and operators.”

NodeScanner has supported integrity management programmes for more than 30 clients worldwide, across 100+ inspection campaigns and over 600 weld inspections, where dependable inspection data is critical.

Proven Technology for Ageing Subsea Infrastructure

As subsea infrastructure continues to age, technologies that deliver reliable, diverless inspection data are becoming increasingly important to offshore integrity management.

A decade on, NodeScanner represents TSC Subsea’s approach to subsea inspection:
evolving through offshore experience while remaining grounded in proven, trusted inspection methods and high-quality data.
